We are currently backing up all of our content through one data center, but will be setting up Commvault in a second location soon in our peer data center. Once we do that, we will have our various branches backing up to the two different Commvault sites. We will be replicating data via HUR and have copies of the data on tape. My question is about the recovery of backups in the event of a disaster.

Let's say we have the following:

    Data Center 1:

    -Branch A backup

    Data Center 2:

    -Branch B backup

We lose data center 1, are we able to restore the content of branch A through data center 2? Given all of the configuration issues we have experienced with Commvault thus far makes us hesitant to use the dash-copy feature, so let's assume that's unavailable in this scenario. Would the two Commvault sites be aware of what the other is backing up via the deduplication databases so they would be able to restore data effectively?

The other question I had around this concern relates to future backups. In that same scenario, let's say we wanted to start backing up branche A via data center 2 since we lost data center 1. Would we need to take new full backups? Or would creating a subclient with the same name be enough for Commvault to recognize the data is replicated over on disk, then it will start backing up by taking incrementals with data center 2?

    Hi Travis,

Just to clarify, when you say 2 CV sites, you mean the Media Agents are part of the same CommCell or do you have [2] Commserve setups with its own MAs that don't see the other MAs?

What we plan on having is two separate instances of Commvault, so we would have 4 MAs in total, 2 of them for each CommServe. That way if we ever lost one of our CommServe sites, the other would have the capability to take over the backup responsibilities for all of our branches.

Right so how would the MAs see each other?

Also about your previous questions, if you have a true DR where the CS is not available as long as your have the Commserve backup to restore on a new machine and access to the library/storage pools you will still be able to restore, for DeDupe there is no reliance on the DDB for restoring data.

I'm not sure how the MAs would see each other, based on your response I take it that they wouldn't be able to? If we take backups of branch A from Data Center 1 using its set of CS and MAs, would we be able to start taking backups or have the capability of doing restores of branch A from Data Center 2?

Yes, that would be a true DASH copy, where you would just point to (or read from) the offsite MA then restore it to any location/client machine within the CommCell.

Also you would use these options to pick from the secondary/site or in Commvault it would be precedence

If you loose the MA, you build it up, then attach it to the storage and change the Data Path

Hope that makes sense and what you're trying to accomplish.

You could theoretically do it with [2] unique commcells however they wouldn't directly talk or share data amongst themselves.

That makes sense, thanks for the response. Let's say we didn't have dash copies of the data on disk, but we have non-deduped tapes backed up and stored off-site of Branch A at Data Center 1. We lose Data Center 1, can we restore Branch A content using the tape library in Data Center 2?
