    Hi

    Brand new Simpana v9 install

    I have 2x Exchange 2010 servers sitting on VMs

    Exch DB being backed up with DAG - All OK

    FS backup is OK

    Mailbox backups for each server initailly (for about a week) worked OK

    Now both pending at 25% with a message from ExMBBackupShadow with an event code of 28:3

    Description: ImpersonateLoggedOnUser() failed, error number [183].

    MAPI profiles and credentials are fine as I can log into the servers as the account specified and connect to the profiles commvault agent is using with MS outlook. Account is a domain/Exchange admin.

    I suspect a windows/AD/Permissions issue but not sure where to look?

    ExMBBackupShadow.log on exchange server (With customer server names replaced with server function):

    this has nothing to do with profiles, though it does use the same account information to impersonate the process that writes to the log files

    7848 1f88 08/05 14:53:23 ### main() - after LogonUser
    7848 1f88 08/05 14:53:28 ### CVImpersonateLoggedOnUser() - Failing user impersonation as the user is not able to write to Galaxy log files
    7848 1f88 08/05 14:53:28 ### main() - Unable to impersonate user.

    When you log into the client using the specified credentials, can you create/modify text files in the Log Files directory under <Simpana Install Path> ?

    A step in the right direction I hope - thanks a lot for helping

    I could not write to the log file directory so I have given "users" on the machine modify rights to the whole comvmault directory

    Still get the same error ImpersonateLoggedOnUser() failed, error number [740]. but the error number is now different - 740

    The log file for ExMBBackupShadow now says:

    9068 1c80 08/05 15:48:22 ### main() - Unable to create process - 740

    I guess this must be some Windows permissions/rights too?

    this error code means :

    The requested operation requires elevation.

    (by the way, you can check this on your machine by typing from the command line "net helpmsg 740)

    is UAC enabled on this machine ? Do you have any special UAC configurations pushed in group policy ?

    We made some changes to UAC behavior early in the release, can you confirm which service pack you are currently using ?

    Thanks SReents

    SP2b at the moment - also having problems with update at the moment through customer's firewall - still in the throws of installation

    Will probably be able to upgrade to SP3 on Monday as I am onsite there

    Is it possible that the UAC has been added by policy or somesuch since the installation of the agent and this is why there is a problem?

    UAC is on by default in 2k8/vista and higher, so likely it has always been there.

    if you are on SP2b that should include all of our UAC changes as we have not made any recently.

    There is one last thing that i have seen sometimes in the past in my lab where even though UAC is on, the registry key that controls it is NOT triggered. In cases like this we do not attempt to elevate our process since we think UAC is not enabled.

    Can you please check the value of this key

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\EnableLUA

    if UAC is enabled, it should be set to 1.

    If it is set to zero right now but UAC is actually enabled (Control Panel -> Users -> Turn UAC On/Off) then can you manually set this key to one and try the job again to see what happens ?

    You could also check to see if you have a user specified on the properties of the agent.  See image below.  This typically is not needed.

    you can find this under job configuration.

    The Registry key change from 0 to 1 has done the trick - job now runs 100%

    Thanks ever so much for your input - nice end to my Friday 8-)
