Do you need to backup the default SQL db's master, model and msdb?
I can see all the other db's that they have created, but I keep seeing
all the defaults being backed up every hr.
In order to answer that question, you really need a little bit of SQL background:
You should definitely back these up for DR situations mostly. The master and model do not change too often, so you wouldnt really need to back these up throughout the day. If your hourly schedule is a transaction log backup, you could do the MSDB database within that as well to capture the changes that occur there. Please check the BOL for some more information:

I know that everyone else knew the answer but me.
I have been told both you do and you don't, just wanted to make sure.
Thanks for all the info!
Have a great weekend
