Pretty specific question, but throwing it out there, see if someone knows

So as you can see in the Subclient Configuration window, in the Content tab, you can filter via multiple types, in our environment we do it based on the Folder.  Trying to make a Workflow to create a couple hundred VM Subclients

    But..... Via the Docs

I see you can do it via VMname or Datastore, can you set the XML to accept Folder filters?

Also note, i'm now on V11, not sure if this functionality is in V11 (the Vmware docs aren't online).

vmFilter/children/type Type of filter to be added to the subclient filters. You can add virtual machines to the subclient filters. Adding datastore disks is currently not supported.

Specify 'VMName' to add a virtual machine to the filters.

vmContent/children/type Type of content to be added to the subclient. Valid values are:
    • VMName, to add a virtual machine to the subclient content
    • DATASTORE, to add a datastore to the subclient content
vmFilter/children/displayName Name of the virtual machine to be added to the subclient filters.
vmContent/children/displayName Name of the virtual machine or datastore, depending on the content type defined in the vmContent/children/type parameter.

    Hi PJValdez,

selecting a folder can be tricky !

in V10 the folder shown in the conent tab was "short" (only last folder level)
if you added a subfolder instead of a base folder, this could exist below several base folder with the same name, but content was only selected from the one you added !

in V11 think about the option of creating a custom attribute to your VMs and do a selection based on this attributes.
this gives you more flexibility and the descision whether a VM will be backed up or not can be done by VM Admins by simply modifying this custom attribute

    have fun

    also have a look at

if documentation is not sufficient, try to create a subclient with your desired settings and use "get_subclient_properties" to see the settings. might show other than BOL :)

The Folder Configuration is tricky but it wasn't as bad as I thought.  Here is the filter I added in the <App_createSubclientRequest>.

    4 Variables you need

    1) Displayname=Given name of the Folder

    2) Name=The Folder's Virtual GroupID

    3) Path=Usually, /Vcenter/Datacenter/Folder(or subfolders)

    4) Type=Folder

The hardest part was finding the Virtual Group Id, very dooable if you have powercli.

       <children displayName="Junk" equalsOrNotEquals="true" name="group-v7535" path="<VCENTER_Name>/<DataCenter>/Junk" type="FOLDER"/>
