  • Disable/enable backup activity on a client

    We are running on Simpana 11 with SP5. Is there a way via workflow or qoperation to automate the following task?

    We need to send a cli job from an external host which modifies the "backup activity" feature either in sublient or the whole client level.  Any simple way to do this via CLI?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

    Commandline can enable/disable activity on client, subclient.

    http://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/v11/article?p=products/windows/t_winfs_cli_modify_a_subclient.htm
    http://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/v11/article?p=products/windows/t_winfs_cli_config_elements.htm

    Example:

    Enable backup activity on file system subclient:
    qoperation execute -af <Path of update_subclient_template.xml> -appName 'File System' -clientName 'CLIENT_NAME' -backupsetName 'BACKUPSET_NAME' -subclientName 'SUBCLIENT_NAME' -enableBackup true

    update_subclient_template.xml
    <App_UpdateSubClientPropertiesRequest>
    <association>
    <entity>
    <appName>File System</appName>
    <clientName/>
    <backupsetName/>
    <subclientName/>
    </entity>
    </association>
    <subClientProperties>
    <commonProperties>
    <enableBackup>true</enableBackup>
    </commonProperties>
    </subClientProperties>
    </App_UpdateSubClientPropertiesRequest>

    Enable Backup activity on client:
    qoperation execute -af <Path of update_client_template.xml> -entity/clientName 'CLIENT_NAME' -activityControlOptions/activityType BACKUP -activityControlOptions/enableActivityType true

    Enable Restore activity on client:
    qoperation execute -af <Path of update_client_template.xml> -entity/clientName 'CLIENT_NAME' -activityControlOptions/activityType RESTORE -activityControlOptions/enableActivityType true

    update_client_template.xml
    <App_SetClientPropertiesRequest>
    <association>
    <entity>
    <clientName/>
    </entity>
    </association>
    <clientProperties>
    <clientProps>
    <clientActivityControl>
    <activityControlOptions>
    <activityType/>
    <enableActivityType/>
    <enableAfterADelay>false</enableAfterADelay>
    </activityControlOptions>
    </clientActivityControl>
    </clientProps>
    </clientProperties>
    </App_SetClientPropertiesRequest>

    Thanks,
    Anant

    Thanks Anant for the reply.  I tested it yesterday and worked very good but I generated  the XML file from the "save as script" option on GUI.  I have two questions:

    1. Is the update_client_template.xml standard for all clients and between versions say version 9, 10 and 11 ?  I can use this template with any clients?

    2. How would I go if clients are spread between 2 commcells?

    Thanks again,

    1. Yes, update_client_template.xml is can be used on v9, v10, v11 versions.

    update_client_template.xml
    <App_SetClientPropertiesRequest>
    <association>
    <entity>
    <clientName/>
    </entity>
    </association>
    <clientProperties>
    <clientProps>
    <clientActivityControl>
    <activityControlOptions>
    <activityType/>
    <enableActivityType/>
    <enableAfterADelay>false</enableAfterADelay>
    </activityControlOptions>
    </clientActivityControl>
    </clientProps>
    </clientProperties>
    </App_SetClientPropertiesRequest>

    2. Following command can login to remote CS and execute commandline.
    Remote CS can be of same release. It cannot execute commandline from v11 to v10 because the client binary is at a higher version than the server.

    qlogin -cs CommServehostname -csn CommServeclientname -u username -p password

    qoperation execute -cs CommServehostname -af <Path of update_client_template.xml> -entity/clientName CLIENT_NAME -activityType BACKUP -enableActivityType true

    Thanks,
    Anant
