  • Consolidating storage policy copies (with different data sets) into one

    I'm starting the long trek out of a deep capacity related hole and I now have a couple of storage policies where an extended retention copy on site #1 was disabled and replaced with an extended retention copy on site #2 - "to tide us over". Well the good news is, we survived :) Now though I'm wanting to pull all the backup jobs out of the extended retention copies on sites #1 & #2 and put them into a new library on site #3.

    Something like this:

    • Primary [Local] - 7d retention
    • Site #1  - 5yr retention {Disabled}
    • Site #2 - 5yr retention

    My current theory goes:

    • Create a new site #3 copy policy and aux copy the site #1 jobs into it.
    • Once that's complete, set retention on the site #1 copy policy to 7 days and run data aging to clear the space down.
    • Celebrate a bit; site #1 now has space!
    • Change site #3 copy policy to use site #2 copy policy as source and re-run aux copy.

    This is the part where I get nervous. Does it keep hold of the data it's already got from the site #1 copy and ADD the jobs from site #2, or does it sack all the previous data off?

    If it works, I assume once I've got everything off the site #2 copy moved I could then point my site #3 copy policy to use the primary as it's source and not have to worry about creating a whole new SP to deal with the future?

    Fingers crosssed all that makes sense.
