I want to set up tape copies of backups (which will all be fulls) for long-term retention. Something like 12 months of monthly full backup copies, 2 years of quaterlies, and 7 years of annual backup copies.
This can be done, in principle, in a single storage policy copy with extended retention, but that's not desirable beacause it would mix very different retentions on the same tapes. The best way to do this seems to be by creating a seperate storage policy copy for each retention type: one for monthlies, one for quaterlies, and one for yearlies.
The problem that I forsee is.....once a year three different copies will be made of the same backups: monthly, quaterly, and yearly all at the same time. Which will result in very heavy tape drive usage once a year. Also, there will be two copies made of the same backups every quarter: monthly and quarterly.
Do I understand how this works correctly? Is there are way to avoid the year-end duplication?
